A Taste of the Orient
Into the unknown on a rock 'n' roll adventure
So, Bali. Backpacker paradise and land of smiles. We're here for the weekend with a photoshoot and Bruce's official interview planned for the Saturday and then interviews with the final band member Dave and long-term Maiden production manager Dickie, alongside a last photoshoot, scheduled for Sunday at the venue for the concert, a stunning park full of Hindu statues and vast cliffs.
Another alarm call beaten by a body already awake, so up I get, and the usual routine of breakfast and a couple of hours work is followed by a 10.30 check out. Unfortunately it seems that the pre-agreed payment by our travel team has got lost in the translation and I am expected to settle the full bill which is 18million rupees!!!
Amazing what a good night's sleep can do for you. I'm up and awake at 7am, refreshed and raring to go. We've got hours yet before we need to leave for the venue so I grab my flipflops and shorts and head down to the hotel gardens where a complex of pools are fringed by palm trees. With no-one else around I power up and down the pool, getting a good thirty minutes of exercise under my expanding belt to mitigate against last night's multi-course feast.
I sleep deeply but wake at 6.30, jetlag and anticipation coursing through my veins. Tired, I try and manage another hour of dozing but it's fitful at best so I head downstairs for breakfast and hand my passport over to Fernando, one of the flight crew travelling with us. As we’re on a private plane all our documentation needs to be approved in advance to enter Indonesia.
An early start to catch up on work back home means that breakfast is a relatively swift affair. Both Matt and I then retire to our rooms to plug in the laptops and do a few hours of screen time before meeting in the lobby at 11.30 and taking a cab to Chinatown. With Matt having been delayed yesterday he's not really had a chance to get a flavour of Singapore and needs to provide a backdrop to the feature.
I meet Matt at quarter to six in the lobby and hear all about his horrible flight. Seems that Iraq unexpectedly closed its airspace yesterday so instead of being able to fly over the country on its direct route to Singapore the plane had to pass over Syria, Jordan, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Oman instead. All of which meant it couldn't complete the flight without refuelling, hence the unscheduled stop in Dubai.
I'm asleep by 12.30 but woken five hours later by a text from Matt. His plane is delayed and they're currently on an unscheduled stopover in Dubai, so he's going to be at least three hours late arriving into Singapore, if not more. I roll over and before I know it the alarm goes off.
I've had barely an hour's sleep when the phone goes. It's Rod, the band's manager, informing me that they've just arrived into Singapore from Moscow where they've just played the first show of their 2011 world tour. We discuss the forthcoming shows in Singapore, Jakarta and Bali and he suggests a change of plans for the interviews due to start tomorrow. I arrange to meet him tonight to catch up and finalise everything, but now that I'm awake I decide to get up and explore a bit of the city.
There are moments in life which seem somewhat unreal and settling back on the top deck of a new-fangled Airbus A380 with the announcement welcoming us on board our Qantas flight to Singapore, I'm suddenly hit by the craziness of this new adventure.
Sunday morning, and a chance to take things easy for a few hours, so a little extra sleep to counteract the late night means I miss breakfast. It's too hot to sit in the sun so I stay in the air-conditioned chill of the bedroom until lunchtime.
